A multifaceted approach is best for maximum control over osteoarthritis. Every patient is unique and should—in conjunction with a physician—use whatever combination of treatments works best:

· patient education about OA
· exercise
· weight control
· physiotherapy
· anti-inflammatory drugs
· non-narcotic analgesics such as acetaminophen
· alternative medicines and natural remedies
· acupuncture
· local injections of glucorticoids
· surgery to relieve chronic pain in damaged joints
