Alternative drug treatment for osteoarthritis?
Diacerein is a drug which is used to treat osteoarthritis. Unlike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), Diacerein inhibits IL-1 an inflammatory mediator instead of acting on the cyclooxigenase (COX) enzymes.
Here is some of the latest information on Diacerein:
"Diacerein was as effective as piroxicam in reducing pain and improving function but, unlike piroxicam, displayed a carry-over effect and a better safety profile" (Loutrenoo et al, 2007).
"The level of quality of the evidence is 'gold'. It appears that diacerein has a small effect in improving pain and slowing the progress of osteoarthritis (in the hip). Diarrhoea is a common side effect of diacerein" (http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab005117.html)
Louthrenoo W, Nilganuwong S, Aksaranugraha S, Asavatanabodee P, Saengnipanthkul S, Thai Study Group . The efficacy, safety and carry-over effect of diacerein in the treatment of painful knee osteoarthritis: a randomised, double-blind, NSAID-controlled study.
