New treatment for the common cold?

Cold Virus Structure
We're in the middle of winter for those of us in northern climates which generally means that we're faced with coping with symptoms of the common cold.  However, a new research study on new nasal spray containing Iota-Carrageenan may hold some promise.

To date, the common cold still lacks an effective and safe antiviral treatment.  Yet, it's the most prevalent viral disease in humans.

Carrageenans are actually a family of linear polysaccharides extracted from red seaweeds.

In a study involving 35 human subjects published in the journal, Respiratory Research [1], the study authors found that Iota-Carrageenan nasal spray actually reduced symptoms of the common cold and viral load in the nasal lavages.

From the study authors:
CONCLUSIONS: Iota-Carrageenan nasal spray appears to be a promising treatment for safe and effective treatment of early symptoms of common cold. Larger trials are indicated to confirm the results.
